Dave, better known as Rex in darting circles,
fell into darts in 1997 following a number of spinal
fusion operations. "A mate of mine - another Dave
had a dart board set up out in his garage and
invited me over to have a game . . . it was more an
excuse to get out of the house really, that, and the
fact that he made this sweet tasting home brew which
he had to finish off each week so he could make more
batches." |
After about 12 months of
recreational darts, Dave started playing social
darts at the Wests Illawarra venue, where he was
invited to play in a new C Grade mens team
commencing in 1999. He played singles in the #8 spot
and went through the comp without losing a game.
"That was great for my confidence. I had some great
mentors who taught me my pegs from the get-go."
Dave has won singles, doubles, threes and fours
events since 2000 and was the Captain of Wests
WipeOuts and Wests Grinners who won 8 consecutive A
Grade Grand Finals. A member of the Illawarra Rep
team since 2000, he has been team captain for the
past 2 years.
He has been on Illawarra Dart Committees since 2002
and is the current Secretary in the Illawarra
District Darts Association and Treasurer on the
Illawarra Darts Association Committee.
Dave's involvement with Australian Open started in 1999.
From the early beginnings of attending events (#15
seed at the first Oceanic Masters), he has evolved
his participation to playing and becoming Australian Open
Caller and co-MC at Grand Prix events.
"My my most enjoyable experience with DPA so far was
the 2007 William Cross Pro Am where I got to call
all stage matches from the quarter finals on. Making
the final 32 for the main event was probably my best
achievement - there were players who missed out who
are probably better than me most of the time,
however I played really well when I had to."
"I really enjoy doing the match calling . . . I have
a long way to go until I can say I am any good at
it, I guess it's a matter of practice making
perfect. I am really looking forward to meeting Russ
Bray and listening to him do his thing . . . I hope
he can offer constructive criticism on my efforts."
